It has been an absolutely busy week on-site at Ayana House… the Kitchen is now taking shape and we can finally see the finer details coming to life. Read on to see the whole story on the kitchen design and installation.
From the very beginning of the renovation we knew that we wanted to create a chef style kitchen that celebrated cooking and entertaining. With this in mind, we decided to choose a selection of incredible appliances from Fisher and Paykel, which allowed for user friendly yet chef quality cooking. Through a recent visit to their Alexandria Showroom (read the blog story here) we were able to see the appliances in action and make choices which best suited the design we had in mind. We decided on an induction cooktop to be installed within the oversized kitchen island, allowing the chef to cook whilst being able to interact with guests sitting around the island. An integrated Activesmart Fridge allowed us to seamlessly hide the fridge behind our wall of American Black Walnut joinery alongside an integrated microwave, coffeemaker and double ovens.
We are also excited about the incredible Tall DishDrawers we’ve specified in the kitchen, which allow you to pull out the draw and load your dishwasher including all the extra plates and platters. The DishDrawer is also fully integrated within the kitchen joinery so from the outside it just looks like another drawer.
One of the most exciting appliances installed at Ayana House is the Cool Drawer. We chose not to install a traditional wine fridge and instead decided on this amazing appliance which allows you to set the temperature for fresh fruit and veg, wine, meats or even put into freezer mode. We absolutely adore flexibility of an appliance like this, which can easily move from everyday use to entertaining mode when you need more wine on ice, or fresh seafood chilled over Christmas.
As Ayana House was originally designed to be a palette of fresh whites, set against a range of grays. The kitchen always sets a tone for a home, so we brought the warm tones of walnut and brass in through the kitchen and then throughout other areas in the home. The wall of custom American Black Walnut was created by hand by our joiner and B2 Constructions who underwent the painstaking process of following the wood grain against all the cabinet fronts – creating a seamless look.
The Island Benchtop was hand selected by our Director, Melissa Bonney, on a recent trip to Marable’s slab warehouse in Banksmeadow, Sydney. This incredible piece of Super Granite in a leathered finish was chosen as a standout feature and to create a sense of luxury. The perfect partner to this is the slimline Caesarstone benchtop in Pure White installed along the rear bench which is bright and light. The thin profile of the Caesarstone balances the over-sized thickness of the island bench top beautifully.
With the beautiful and timeless Pure White Caesarstone in mind, we decided to carry through the white on this elevation by rendering the walls in a white Stucco finish that we ended up using throughout. We wanted this rear elevation to appear seamless in white so we chose the beautiful Franke Polar White Aragonite Sink from the team at Reece to give a more modern but textural feel. A traditional stainless steel sink would have clashed with the brass handle ware and porcelain didn’t give us the texture we were after, the Franke is made from granite and its matt finish feels luxurious to the touch. Although Reece are known for their bathroom and plumbing products, if you are renovating your kitchen it is worth visiting their showroom and exploring their range of products that can be used in kitchen spaces- from tapware to sinks and beyond.
We have loved using Sussex’s range of Calibre Living Brass taps in the bathrooms at Ayana House, however the kitchen called for a lighter touch. We chose the Scala Pull-out Sink Mixer from Sussex Taps which is an Australian classic. Finished in Matt White the tap sits seamlessly against the counter-top and splash back. If you haven’t read up about the Sussex brand you can read all about it here, however this tap along with the rest of the Sussex range can be custom finished in many different powder coated colours or electroplated metals giving you the power of choice when matching your tap to your scheme.
The final touch was a Billi Tap which gives instant chilled, sparkling and boiling water on demand- a must for a busy family or for entertaining. This model is brand new and soon to be released to the Australian Market, we are loving it already! Also in Matte White the design is clean and ergonomic however the functionality of having sparkling water (literally) on tap is the biggest drawcard for us, bye bye bottled sparkling water!
